Why Book Adventure in Cody

For anglers, this small town offers far more than a gateway to Yellowstone—it’s a basecamp for unforgettable days on legendary rivers, high-elevation lakes, and wild stretches of water that define fishing in northwest Wyoming.

Fishing trips in Cody Wyoming are built around variety. Within a short drive, anglers can fish the Shoshone River, explore stretches of the Yellowstone River, or head toward the famed waters of the Bighorn River. Each river offers a different style of river fishing, from technical fly fishing runs to productive float trips that cover miles of water in a single day. Whether you’re planning a half-day outing or a full fishing trip, Cody makes it easy to find water that matches your goals.

The Shoshone River flows right through town and is one of the most consistent producers in the area, this river is known for healthy populations of trout, including rainbow trout, brown trout, cutthroat trout, and even mountain whitefish. Because of steady flows and cold water, anglers can enjoy productive fly fishing throughout much of the season. Many fishing guides focus on this river due to its accessibility and reliable action, making it a great option for both beginners and experienced anglers.

Just west of Cody, the road toward Yellowstone National Park opens up even more opportunities. The North Fork of the Shoshone winds through stunning scenery and provides classic Cody Yellowstone fishing experiences. This area is also popular for wade trips, allowing anglers to slow down, work individual runs, and truly connect with the river.

Yellowstone National Park and the surrounding Yellowstone Park waters are world-renowned for a reason. From Yellowstone Lake to remote stretches of the Yellowstone River, the region offers diverse fishing trips for anglers seeking iconic settings and wild fish. West Yellowstone and the East Yellowstone Valley expand those options even further, giving anglers access to some of the most pristine backcountry fishing in the lower 48. A valid Wyoming fishing license is required, and is essential before heading out.

Local outfitters and fly shops play a big role in the Cody fishing scene. Many of the longest operating fishing outfitter services in the area have decades of local knowledge, helping anglers understand seasonal patterns, water conditions, and fly selection. Wyoming trout guides often customize trips based on experience level, whether that means floating the river, hiking into remote water, or organizing pack trips into less-pressured areas.

Lake fishing is another draw around Cody. These waters can produce large trout and provide calm conditions for anglers who prefer stillwater fishing. In winter, ice fishing becomes an option on select reservoirs, adding yet another season to the Cody fishing calendar.

Anglers targeting trout will find impressive diversity. Brook trout thrive in colder headwaters, while rainbow trout and brown trout dominate larger rivers. Cutthroat trout remain a prized catch, especially in waters closer to Yellowstone. Some anglers even come searching for the biggest fish of their lives, drawn by the potential of trophy-class trout in well-managed waters.

Booking a fishing charter or guided fishing trip in Cody removes much of the guesswork. Guides supply rods, flies, and gear, and they know when to float, when to wade, and where fish are holding. Float trips are especially popular on larger rivers, covering long stretches of productive water while giving anglers repeated opportunities to hook fish. For those who prefer a more hands-on approach, wade trips provide a slower pace and deeper connection to the river.

Downtown Cody adds to the overall experience. After a day on the river, anglers can explore local restaurants, learn about Buffalo Bill at nearby museums, or simply relax and swap fishing stories. The town’s proximity to world-class water makes it easy to fish hard during the day and still enjoy comfortable evenings back in town.

From fly fishing the Shoshone River to planning extended Wyoming river trips near Yellowstone National Park, Cody delivers a fishing experience rooted in wild landscapes and strong traditions. With knowledgeable guides, diverse trout species, and rivers that consistently produce, it’s no surprise that anglers return year after year. Whether you’re chasing wild trout, planning your first fly fishing outing, or looking to explore legendary Western rivers, Cody, Wyoming offers fishing trips that are as memorable as the scenery itself.

My husband and I had the best time ever with Jon, owner of Frisky Fish Outfitters! His boat is so well equipped and supplied everything needed, including putting us right where the fish were on the lake. We had a blast reeling in some really nice salmon and rainbow trout. He even cleaned and filleted them for us! We definitely will be booking with Frisky Fish again and highly recommend him to all looking for a fun day reeling in nice fish on a beautiful lake!
